The Pros and Cons of Globalization

PLUSES
-- Productivity grows more quickly when countries produce goods and services in which they have a comparative advantage.
--Living standards can go up faster.
-- Global competition and cheap imports keep a lid on prices, so inflation is less likely to derail economic growth.
-- An open economy spurs innovation with fresh ideas from abroad.-- Export jobs often pay more than other jobs.
-- Unfettered capital flows give country access to foreign investment and keep interest rates low.

MINUSES

-- Millions of Americans have lost jobs due to imports or production shifts abroad. Most find new jobs that pay less.
-- Millions of others fear losing their jobs, especially at those companies operating under competitive pressure.
-- Workers face pay-cut demands from employers, which often threaten to export jobs.
-- Service and white-collar jobs are increasingly vulnerable to operations moving offshore.
-- Employees can lose their comparative advantage when companies build advanced factories in low-wage countries, making them as productive as those at home

the survey, basically, ws to knw abt ppl's opinion abt Globalization.

Well, having discussed the topic of global warming in the class, i'd like to share some information abt it.( though it is not directly related to the topic of Globalization.)

Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's
temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth
may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a
wide range of impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans.
Global warming is caused by the "Greenhouse effect." Just like any
other planet, the Earth absorbs the sun's heat and radiates it back
towards space. But greenhouse gases trap heat and reflect it back
towards the Earth. The more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the
more heat that is trapped. The less the amount of greenhouse gases,
the less heat that is trapped.

schematic of CO2's actions in atmosphereEach greenhouse gas has its
own important role in trapping the sun's heat, the most significant of
which is water vapour. On a clear day, water vapour can comprise 60 to
70 percent of the greenhouse effect. Next in line, carbon dioxide
contributes an additional 25 percent.
Solutions to Global Warming

There are many solutions to reduce the amount of green house gases in
the atmosphere, which causes Global Warming.

A main culprit for global warming is the use of CFC's
(chlorofluorocarbons). If the use of CFC's was reduced, the number of
greenhouse gases will be reduced by a great deal (however there are
many other thing that cause dramatic amounts of greenhouse gases
including carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide). The items that contain
CFC's are regular house hold items, but they can have a devastating
effect on the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. They are
found in aerosols, plastic foam and fridges. However now that the
scientists have a greater knowledge on the effect of CFC's the
government had banned the selling of objects with CFC's in; and also
great care is needed when disposing of older items containing CFC's
e.g. fridges. CFC's are 40 times more effective as a greenhouse gas
then carbon dioxide.
